Dear North Kingstown School Community -
I would like to welcome everyone to a new year of North Athletics! The excitement for our Fall season athletic games is visible as you walk the halls of our schools. We invite our community to come out and attend games to support and cheer on our student athletes. In preparing for this year’s season, we have identified key fan expectations for all home and away games. We want to ensure we are always expressing positive Skipper qualities, which start with our staff and families as role models to our students and continue to be demonstrated with our community. It is my belief and that of my fellow administrators that clear, specific expectations are important to ensure everyone who is attending our events can have fun supporting our student athletes and coaches in a family-friendly, safe environment.
I ask you, as students, family, and community members, to help us in doing so.
North fans are expected to attend sporting events and cheer positively and enthusiastically for our student-athletes. Our fans are expected to show pride in their school and support for their classmates. They are also expected to represent themselves appropriately and demonstrate the Skipper Values.
If fans follow the guideline of positive cheering, then we are confident we will have a fun, safe, and family-friendly environment.
Student attendance and participation in a sporting event is a school event. This means
that any failure to adhere to expectations may be subject to school-based consequences.
Students from our Middle Schools and Elementary Schools will be required to attend
all sporting events with an adult. Due to supervision and safety, an adult must accompany
any student or child under 9th grade to all events.
It is expected that all fans cooperate with directives from NKSD game officials. We have
officials assigned to every game. These officials may include the athletic director, building
administrators, and/or other assigned staff. These officials are responsible for making sure the
event is safe and respectful, and for addressing any negative fan behavior. Any lack of cooperation
may result in ejection from the event and school-based consequences for students.
Under no circumstances are NK fans permitted to direct negative cheers, taunts, insults,
etc. towards members of the opposing team. There are no exceptions to this rule. This
includes players, coaches, and the other team's fans. Any fan who engages in these actions may
be subject to ejection from the event and school-based disciplinary consequences.
Fans are expected to adhere to the rules of the venue that is hosting the event. That
means all off-campus venues that NKSD uses for athletic competition. Including but not limited to,
Boss Ice Arena, Ryan Park, Lischio Field, etc. Failure to comply with such rules may result in
ejection from the event and school-based disciplinary consequences for students.
All cheering must be in a positive tone. Taunting and insulting made towards referees or
game officials will not be tolerated. It may result in ejection from the event and school-based
disciplinary consequences for students.
If our students show that they are unable to follow these set expectations, the
administration reserves the right to prohibit them from attending games.
Administration reserves the right to prohibit students from attending sporting events, if
deemed necessary, to preserve a safe and respectful environment for all
student-athletes.
Our district takes great pride in its strong athletic community. Through our sportsmanship, let us reflect the pride we share in our student-athletes, coaches, and schools. I look forward to seeing you at upcoming games as we come together to cheer on our teams!
Thank you,
Kenneth A. Duva, Ed.D
